Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital content arm of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, had signed an EXCLUSIVE deal with Netflix in 2019.
Dharmatic was to provide all its content; fiction and non-fiction series and films only to Netflix.
However, two years later now, the deal has been called off allegedly. “The deal has been called off and Dharmatic can now work with other video streaming services too,” a source told Economic Times.
The entertainment banner and the OTT giant will continue working on projects that have already been announced like – Finding Anamika series (starring Madhuri Dixit Nene), rom-com flick Meenakshi Sundareshwar (starring Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani) and 2nd season of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives (starring Neelam Kothari, Maheep Kapoor, Bhavna Pandey, Seema Khan).
A source told the portal that ‘too much interference’ from Netflix had resulted in the deal being reportedly called off.
“The entire (content) industry knows it. They (Netflix) want everything in a certain way and sometimes it’s frustrating and confusing. There is a disconnect between what they want and what they say.”
However, when KJO was asked to comment on the matter, he told Spotboye – “It was always a two-year deal with Netflix. No more no less. As always this is a case of making a mountain out of a molehill.”
Meanwhile, KJO is back in the director’s chair with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh.
