In a recent IGTV video, former West Indies cricket Captian Darren Sammy politely requested his IPL teammates of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for an apology as he just discovered the meaning of a nickname they had given him. In woke of the Black Lives Matter movement post the death of George Floyd, Darren Sammy spoke out on how a few indian cricketers has referred to him as ‘Kalu’.
Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund has posted a tweet on August 9th in the year 2017 saying that he has been a victim of racism on the basis of his skin colour. He states how he has travelling far and wide across the country and has played and practiced cricket in the sun for too many years. His skin’s complexion is a result of heritage and is a mark of his hardwork in the sport that he is proud of.
To this tweet, Darren Sammy replied encouraging him to stay strong and that he is beautifully made.
Darren Sammy let out a much baffled tweet to the ICC and other cricket boards so that they could get vocal on the sensitive issue at hand.
Former West Indies Captain Chris Gayle also replied to Darren Sammy’s tweet on being called ‘kalu’ which in hindi slang would refer to someone of dark skin.
Gayle himself has been very vocal on the Black Lives Matter issues ever since news of Goerge Floyd’s death.
Soon after word spread of Darren Sammy’s requested apology, the internet broke out an old picture posted on the profile of Indian cricketer Ishant Sharma where he clearly captioned the word ‘kalu’ in reference to Sammy.
However, Darren took to twitter and told us how he had an interesting conversation with a few of his Sunrisers team members whose names are still disclosed. He notified that the apology was no longer due as the sportsmen would like to grow positively from this situation and that it was in said in context of endearment.
Darren later on stated that he shouldn’t have asked for an apology without speaking to his team mates first.
“In hindsight, asking for apology, I shouldn’t have even done that. If me and my team-mates have done something not intentionally, but now I realise that could be deemed or termed as something that could be hurtful to a team mate of mine.”
In awareness of Darren Sammy’s tweets, actress Swara Bhasker took to twitter and replied to Sammy’s tweet saying the Indian cricketers must still apologize and that #thatsnotcricket.
