It was being reported that a case has been filed against Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt.
The news is indeed true. Gangubai Kathiawadi’s adopted son- Babuji Rawji Shah has started the case.
Not only Bhansali and Alia but even writer Hussain Zaidi and reporter Jane Borges have been named in the case. Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on the book ‘The Mafia Queens of Mumbai‘, written by Zaidi with original research by Borges.
As reported by The Print, the 74-year-old Babuji Rawji Shah has raised objection to the book’s second part (from pages 50 to 69) which details his mother Gangubai’s life. He has claimed it is defamatory in nature and an infringement upon his right to privacy, self-respect and liberty.
Shah has sought a permanent order; regarding the deletion of certain chapters and restraining the book from being printed and circulated. He has also demanded that the movie’s production be halted!
Narendra Dubey, Shah’s lawyer, said a criminal complaint may also be filed against all of the above named for defamation, indecent representation of women, and circulation of obscene and indecent material. The first hearing of the case took place at Bombay Civil Court and the defendants will have to respond by January 7.
His lawyer also alleged social harassment ever since the promos of the movie came out.
“Ever since the promo of the film came out, rumours have spread and Shah has been harassed in his own locality. His leg was fractured from being hit. His relatives are also suffering as they are now being known as coming from a ‘prostitute family’,” Dubey told ThePrint.
The movie Gangubai Kathiawadi featuring Alia Bhatt in the titular role revolves around Gangubai becoming the ‘madam of Kamathipura’, Mumbai’s red-light area.
