Among the sea of recent mediocre Akshay Kumar films, Ram Setu manages to stay afloat.

Rating: 3/5

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Satyadev Kanchrana

Director: Abhishek Sharma

Runtime: 2h 24m

Storyline:

Akshay stars as an atheist archaeologist and Nushrat plays his God-fearing, history professor wife.

He has been tasked with finding scientific evidence to declare that the existence of Ram Setu bridge predates Shri Ram and it is essentially a nature-made creation. His expedition is funded by a tycoon, who has a vested interest in demolishing Ram Setu and profiting off building a sea passage between India and Sri Lanka.

He meets environmentalist Dr Sandra (Jacqueline) and the mysterious, charismatic Lankan guide AP (Satya Dev), who help him uncover the truth along the journey.

What Do We Think?

Ram Setu has an interesting premise and gives off a very Indiana Jones and much more recently, Karthikeya 2 vibes.

The first half is exciting enough (though the CGI is quite shoddy and takes you out of the experience a little bit). Akshay comes off as a little weary in his performance. Jacqueline doesn’t play Akshay’s love interest but still doesn’t stand out character-wise and is reduced to being the screaming sidekick.

Satyadev, who plays the Lankan guide, gives a rather charming performance. Nushrat gets the short end of the stick here and is stuck with a superficial role.

Though the script is cliched in bits, Ram Setu still makes for a decent popcorn entertainer. However, the whole faith vs science debate lacks nuance and is heavy-handed.

Hit Or Miss:

Go hit the theatres if you’re in the mood for some desi Indiana Jones!
