Former beauty queen Dia Mirza tied the knot with businessman Vaibhav Rekhi on Feb 15, in an intimate ceremony.
Her eco-friendly & sustainable wedding was praised by many.
From getting a woman priest to perform the wedding rituals to buying hand-crafted woven baskets from artisans in Meghalaya and sent everybody a plant as return gifts– Dia & Vaibhav’s simple yet elegant intimate wedding created headlines.
Recently while talking to a portal Dia Mirza opened up on how she became successful in creating an eco-friendly, earthy, and sustainable wedding without any wastages.
Do you know why the couple opted for simple wedding outfits instead of fancy & lavish ones? Well, it’s because they wanted to reuse and wear it again and again.
“So, the last time around I auctioned my clothes and this time around I made sure to get a garment that I could reuse and wear again and again. Even my husband chose an outfit which he could continue wearing through life instead of just hanging up in the cupboard and never touch it again.”
To ensure “that there was absolutely no food waste”, the couple made sure that they knew exactly how many vegetarians and non-vegetarians were attending the wedding and did food-plating accordingly.
The actress-social activist revealed in the video that instead of giving out lavish gifts, they bought “hand-crafted woven baskets from artisans in Meghalaya and sent everybody a plant”. She also made sure that the water bottles used at her wedding were made of glass and not plastic.
Because they wanted an ‘earthy wedding’, they went for ‘hyper-local’ flowers. “All our decor was primarily the use of wasted twigs and wood and locally grown flowers. When we think of big events and weddings, we tend to use exotic flowers from all over the world, there’s obviously carbon footprint of transport, etc.”
“So making it sustainable, would entail going local and it also makes it just more easily accessible, earthy, and beautiful. Also, we wanted a very earthy wedding and a very rustic Indian wedding. So, all the decor elements were local and were on hire so they would get recycled,” Dia revealed.
“All the decor elements were natural and locally available. A lot of them were recyclable and were on hire, so obviously, they would get recycled again,” she added.
Meanwhile, Dia & Vaibhav are expecting their first child together.
