MISSION RANIGANJ – The Great Bharat Rescue is inspired by a real-life hero, Late Jaswant Singh Gill, an engineer who led a challenging rescue mission to save trapped miners from a flooded coal mine.
Akshay Kumar steps into the shoes of Jaswant Singh Gill aka Capsule Gill, Additional Chief Mining Engineer and a rescue trained officer, who risked his own life and rescued the 65 miners who were trapped inside the Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj, West Bengal in 1989.
In a race against time with several roadblocks, Gill comes up with a ‘desi jugaad’ to rescue them before they drown or die by inhaling the poisonous CO2 gas forming rapidly inside the mine.
Watch Mission Raniganj to see how Gill’s courage, resilience and relentless efforts overcame adversities, making it one of the bravest rescue operations in the country.
Mission Raniganj Movie Review; WHAT Do We THINK?
Based on real-life heroism, Mission Raniganj is a compelling and potentially inspiring film. Director Tinu Suresh Desai’s screenplay is gripping and will keep you on the edge-of-your-seat.
However, he lets his leading man, Akshay, dominate most of the screentime, taking the story and emotions a backseat. There is no character buildup for the trapped miners to make you feel for them. The characters of the antagonists – two corrupt officials played by Dibyendu Bhattacharya and Shishir Sharma – also seem to be stereotypical.
Akshay Kumar delivers an earnest performance as Jaswant Singh Gill. He has left no stone unturned to do justice to the character.
Gill’s pregnant wife, Nirdosh (played by Parineeti Chopra) is a strong individual with full of positivity and patience. Nirdosh is Gill’s pillar of strength. Parineeti did justice to her role. However, she appears only for a couple of scenes and two songs and hardly has anything to do with the narrative.
Kumud Mishra stands out as R.J. Ujjwal, Mahabir Colliery chief. Ravi Kishan and Jameel Khan are convincing as trapped miners.
The film is high on bravery and the climax will send a chill down your spine. While the rescue mission is the hero of the movie, it goes over-the-top in several moments.
The VFX also appears to be weak. Sandeep Shirodkar’s BGM is loud and the songs are average.
HIT Or MISS?
The Akshay Kumar starrer rescue mission is worth a watch in theatres. It’s a story about real-life heroism that is engaging and thrilling experience. However, the movie needs a strong word of mouth to make an impact at the box office numbers.
