Saira Banu was born in December 1973 in Kutch, Gujarat to an upper middle-class family. She is almost 7 years younger than the 57 year-old AR Rahman.
Did you know the couple got hitched in an arranged marriage which was fixed by AR Rahman’s mother? His mother and sister first saw Saira at the shrine of the Sufi saint Moti Baba in Chennai.

AR Rahman Met Ex-Wife Saira Banu On His 28th Birthday
AR Rahman first met Saira Banu on 6 January 1995, during his 28th birthday. It was quite a brief meeting. Saira spoke Kutchi and English, so Rahman proposed to her in English. 2 months later, the duo tied the knot on March 12, 1995, in Chennai. The ceremony was held in the same building where Rahman would later establish the AM Studios in 2006.
Saira Banu is also known for her philanthropic work, in areas of education, healthcare, and community development.

Why Did AR Rahman And Saira Banu Divorce?
‘Significant emotional strain’ and ‘insurmountable tensions and difficulties’ have led to the couple’s divorce, despite their love for each other.
“Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony.” – read Saira’s statement.
