Akshay Kumar often gets criticized for his Canadian citizenship.
Now, the actor has decided to renounce his Canadian passport.
During an interview with AajTak, the Selfiee actor opened up on how he feels bad when people say things about his Canadian citizenship without knowing the reason behind it.
Calling himself ‘fortunate’, Akshay credited India for his success and also revealed that he has already applied to get his citizenship status changed.
Talking about the criticism, the 55-year-old actor said –
“India is everything to me… Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here. And I’m fortunate that I get a chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything…”
Akshay Kumar, who is known for multiple blockbusters like Padman, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Good Newwz, Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, had delivered more than 15 flops in the 90s. The poor box office performances had pushed him to apply for Canadian citizenship so that he could go there and work for his living.
“I thought that ‘Bhai, my films are not working and one has to work’. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ‘Come here’. I applied and I got in. I had just two films left for release and it is just luck that they both became superhits. My friend said, ‘Go back, start working again’. I got some more films and I kept getting more work. I forgot that I had the passport. I never thought that I should get this passport changed but now yes, I have applied to get my passport changed.”
