Amazon Prime was recently in the news for its raging controversies around Tandav and Mirzapur.
Now a NETFLIX show has come under fire – ‘Bombay Begums’ starring Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur and Aadhya Anand.
As per NDTV report, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has sought for the ban of the show. The apex child rights body has asked Netflix to stop streaming ‘Bombay Begums’ citing inappropriate ‘portrayal of children’.
The OTT platform has been given 24 hours to offer a detailed action report, failing which there will be legal action. This controversy arose after a complaint alleged that Bombay Begums normalized the depiction of minors indulging in casual sex and substance abuse!
NCPCR said that such content could “pollute young minds” and could also result in the abuse and exploitation of children.
“Netflix should take extra precaution while streaming any content in respect of the children or for the children and shall also refrain from getting into such things,” read the commission’s notice to Netflix.
Reacting to the issue, an actor from from the series told Bollywood Hungama – “The ‘inappropriate portrayal of children’ is such a nebulous term. Is the Commission aware of what goes on at the rave parties that teenagers regularly attend? In order to begin to solve the problems that plague our society we must first address those problems. And to address those problems we must first show them on screen. Right? No point in pretending they don’t exist.”
