Amazon Prime Video has been embroiled in quite a few legal controversies of late, especially for its web series Tandav and Mirzapur.
Earlier, a complaint was filed against Mirzapur makers saying that the show portrayed Mirzapur & Uttar Pradesh in an indecent and improper manner.
Based on Arvind Chaturvedi’s petition, an FIR had been registered in UP for offences under Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
However, the Allahabad High Court had granted interim protection from arrest to Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar (the producers of Mirzapur) after they challenged the complaint.
Now, as per India.com report, another plea has been filed against Mirzapur by Rudra Vikram Singh. He has objected to the portrayal of Rasika Dugal’s character Beena Tripathi – for having a sexual relationship with a servant and her father-in-law.
“By showing such ridiculous and shameless things on the name of a city/ district is the insult of approximately 30 lakh population and rich culture of Mirzapur,” the plea read.
The petition also urged the apex court to have the government make some strict guidelines to prohibit the bad portrayal of historical and cultural values of a place.
The Supreme Court then sent a notice to Mirzapur team, seeking a reply from both the director and the producer for allegedly portraying the city in a bad light through the web series.
The date for the hearing is set for March 8.
