Tandav Controversy: FIR Filed Against Makers For Allegedly Hurting Religious Sentiments!

Saif Ali Khan’s latest political drama ‘Tandav’ which released on Amazon Prime Video has landed itself in legal trouble.

BoycottTandav trended on Twitter yesterday, as the makers were slammed by netizens for allegedly hurting ‘Hindu’ sentiments.

The controversy grew so heated that heavy police protection was deployed outside Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra house. The Ali Abbas Zafar show is being accused of being ‘Hinduphobic’ with several political leaders taking offence to this particular scene from the show featuring Zeeshan Ayyub

Amid all the outrage, even the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting sent a notice summoning Amazon Prime Video officials in India for an explanation.

(It is to be noted that the government recently brought even OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar under the ambit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, giving it powers to regulate policies and rules for the online space)

Moreover, an FIR has also been registered at Hazratganj Kotwali against Amazon Prime’s India head of original content Aparna Purohit, ‘Tandav’ director Ali Abbas Zafar,  producer Himanshu Krishna Mehra, writer Gaurav Solanki and others for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

As reported by Indian Express, the FIR has been filed by complainant Amar Nath Yadav, who is a Senior Sub-Inspector at the Hazratganj police station.

The case is under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 505 (1) (B) (statements conducing to public mischief with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility) and 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation) along with sections of the IT Act.
