Directed by Deepa Mehta, Funny Boy is a modern-day story of a young ‘girly’ boy who was harassed and teased for his unlikely ways throughout his childhood.
The film is Canada’s official entry for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
The trailer will melt you as young Arjie is ragged and is made fun of for his so-called girlish sense of life. As he grows, the target isn’t just his playing preferences but is also for his sexual preference. His family is also seen pushing him to harsh corners for going against the ideal behaviour accepted in society.
However, let’s not forget the doting mother he has who teaches him ways to overcome these shattering experiences he goes through in his life.
The trailer also showcases the building tension between the minority Tamils and the majority Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. However, this doesn’t stop Arjie from trying to take a further step in love.
Funny Boy’s settings are that of 1970’s and 80’s Sri Lanka. Co-written by Mehta and Selvadurai, and produced by David Hamilton, it stars Arush Nand and Brandon Ingram. The cast also includes Nimmi Harasgama, Ali Kazmi, Agam Darshi, Seema Biswas, Rehan Mudannayake, and Shivantha Wijesinha.
Funny Boy is an adaptation of Canadian-Sri Lankan author Shyam Selvadurai’s 1994 novel of the same name.
