Pippa Movie Review, Ishaan Khatter Gives One Of His Career-Best Performances!
Rating: 3.5/5
Director: Raja Krishna Menon
Cast: Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli
Runtime: 2h 20 mins
Storyline:
Pippa is based on the book The Burning Chaffees by Balram Singh Mehta. The film tells the story of Captain Balram Singh Mehta of India’s 45 Cavalry regiment who, along with his siblings, fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971.
Named after the Russian amphibious war tank “PT-76”, which floats on water like an empty ‘pippa’ (tin) of ghee, the film traces Mehta’s coming-of-age as he steps up to prove himself in a war to liberate Bangladesh.
Ishaan plays the brash, insolent, daredevil Balram aka Balli, who’s constantly locking horns with his stern brother Major Ram Mehta (Priyanshu) or any other superior really. Mrunal Thakur appears as their soft-spoken sister Radha who works behind the scenes in the war, cracking codes of the enemy at India’s intelligence agency.
Pippa wonderfully explores the tension between the two brothers, the rising terror of the Indo-Pak war, the daring Garibpur battle and rescue missions and of course the famous amphibian tank that played a major part in it.
Pippa Movie Review:
Pippa is a sincere and engaging war drama with a cohesive narrative. It is technically sound with cool action sequences. The Raja Krishna Menon directorial is patriotic without coming across as overtly jingoistic!
Pippa Movie Review:
That being said, Pippa works better as a coming-of-age film than a war drama. Ishaan Khatter has given one of his career’s best performances as Balram. He is authentic and mature in his portrayal – showing various nuances of his character well. Be it the brash, rebellious and mischievous nature of Balli or his fierceness and perseverance in battle.
Ishaan has great voice modulation and convincing dialogue delivery in Pippa and the guy is also a smooth dancer. Overall, an A+ performance by Ishaan.
Pippa Movie Review:
His tense dynamic with Priyanshu (who plays his disciplinarian older brother) forms the emotional heart of the story. Though Priyanshu’s screentime is lesser, he nevertheless leaves an impact, and hits the right note with his performance.
Pippa Movie Review:
Mrunal Thakur, who is somewhat of a mediator between the two brothers – gets her own arc as the intelligence agent as she helps in decoding important messages. Mrunal gets the short end of the stick in Pippa though.
The bond between the siblings is heartwarming and the camaraderie of the 45 Cavalry regiment is pretty entertaining too.
Overall, Pippa is an engaging watch with a standout performance by Ishaan!
Hit Or Miss:
Definitely worth watching for Ishaan. He shows immense potential in Pippa.
