Kiran Rao Laapataa Ladies Out Of Oscars Race

India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, has not made it to the shortlist.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlisted films on December 17th.

Two Indian films, Guneet Monga’s Anuja, and Sandhya Suri’s Santosh, have been shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards. Anuja is in the Short Film category, while Santosh is in the International Feature Film category.

Santosh was selected as the United Kingdom’s official entry. It had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival this year

In September this year, Laapataa Ladies was announced as India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The Film Federation of India committee led by filmmaker Jahnu Barua made the announcement. Aamir Khan’s production was selected from the list of 29 submitted films across various Indian languages, including Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light
