2018 is India’s official entry for Oscars 2024!
For the unversed, it is a Malayalam survival drama film, starring Tovino Thomas in the lead. It has been directed by Jude Anthany Joseph.
What Is 2018 About?
The film revolves around the devastating 2018 Kerala floods. Made on a modest budget of 30 crores, it went on to cross 200 crores at the global box office. It had emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all-time and one of the highest-grossing Indian film of 2023!
It has now been chosen as India’s official entry for the 96th Academy Awards.
Tovino Thomas Talks About 2018 Being Chosen As India’s Entry For Oscars 2024
Talking about this exciting development, Tovino commented to India Today – “Oh! I feel really happy for the whole team for ‘2018’. And personally, I always wanted this kind of recognition to happen for my movies. This is happening, and it’s huge. It’s the first time for me and I’m very excited about it, and I’m very happy that it happened for this film.“
It Is A Very Personal Film For Malayalis – Tovino
Tovino said that 2018 is a very personal film for most Malayalis, which is why this recent honour is even more exciting.
He further continued – “It is the biggest hit in the Malayalam industry and it is already travelling across borders and collecting awards and recognition. Being part of such a film feels great and now it is even selected for such an honour. I also won the best Asian actor at the Septimius Award for the same film, ‘2018’. This movie is already great as it is bringing us many accolades.”
Apart from Tovino Thomas, it also stars Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain and Lal. It has been produced by Venu Kunnappilly, C. K. Padma Kumar and Anto Joseph under the banner of Kavya Film Company and PK Prime Productions.
