What Is Mission Raniganj About?
It is based on the horrific 1989 Raniganj coal mine disaster in West Bengal. In this movie, Akshay plays the role of Jaswant Singh Gill – former chief mining engineer who saved 65 miners trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Raniganj of West Bengal in 1989.
Parineeti Chopra reunites with Akshay Kumar after Kesari as his leading lady for Mission Raniganj. For the unversed, the film was previously titled The Great Indian Rescue. It has now been rechristened with Mission Raniganj – The Great Bharat Rescue.
This change seems to be done in accordance to the current raging debating – whether India should officially be renamed Bharat or not!

On the personal front, Akshay Kumar got his Indian citizenship! On the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day, he decided to renounce his Canadian passport.
He had previously commented – “I thought that ‘Bhai, my films are not working and one has to work’. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ‘Come here’. I applied and I got in. I had just two films left for release and it is just luck that they both became superhits. My friend said, ‘Go back, start working again’. I got some more films and I kept getting more work. I forgot that I had the passport. I never thought that I should get this passport changed but now yes, I have applied to get my passport changed.”
