Rating: 3.5/5
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham
Director: Siddharth Anand
Running time: 2 Hours 26 mins
Storyline:
Agent Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan) is Kintsugi embodied. In Japanese, the philosophy behind Kintsugi is that broken objects, which are put together with gold, become more beautiful in spite of their flaws.
Like Kintsugi, Pathaan who is injured and battered himself becomes part of JOCR (Joint Operations and Covert Research) – an organization that’s made of discarded, damaged soldiers headed by a retired agent (Dimple Kapadia). It is often at loggerheads with RAW head Colonel Luthra (Ashutosh Rana), who believes the group can’t amount to much and calls them ‘broken eggshells’.
Pathaan is tasked with dealing with a new terror threat – Outfit X, a mercenary group that just bows to money. It is led by Jim (John Abraham) a rogue ex-RAW agent who has a bitter connection with India. He is threatening to unleash ominous biological warfare.
And then there’s the intriguing ISI agent Rubia (Deepika Padukone), who holds her cards close and one can never tell which side she is batting for.
Amidst betrayal, terror and chaos, will Pathaan save the day before time runs out? Watch to find out –
What Do We Think?
Pathaan makes for a highly fun watch! There never is a dull moment, the massy spy thriller is action-packed AF, and things happen at quite the breakneck speed. Masala dialogue baazi, blended with some emotion and a dash of patriotism!
SRK-Deepika hold the 1st half with their badass factor, glamour quotient and smouldering chemistry. Shah Rukh Khan is in top form and his physical transformation is commendable. The stylish action set pieces form the core of the film – whether it is the combat sequence on a speeding train, a dangerous bike chase on glaciers or just all-out gunning down!
The plot falters slightly, and the story is not something that you have never seen before, but the sheer swag of the action sequences makes Pathaan paisa wasool. Both Deepika and John get ample fight scenes to show their moves and swagger as well.
Deepika nails the femme fatale role, oozing sensuality, and vulnerability in parts. John makes for a fun villain with a righteous motive for revenge. His face-off with SRK, especially in the climax, is interesting.
Of course, Bhaijaan Salman Khan also makes a seeti-worthy, pivotal cameo in Pathaan, a further nod towards the YRF spy universe! The colorful and peppy songs – Besharam Rang and Jhoome Jo Pathaan add a fun, glamorous touch to Pathaan.
Hit Or Miss:
Pathaan has all the makings of a blockbuster and Shah Rukh Khan has made a comeback with full style and swag!
