Director: Rohit Shetty

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez

Storyline:

Once upon a time, two pairs of twins are born. Dr Roy Jamnadas (Murali Sharma) who runs an orphanage, decides to separate the two sets of identical twins…for science. He’s working on a theory of ‘nature vs nurture’ and decides to experiment by sending them off for adoption into two different families.

Cirkus Movie Review 2022

To add to the confusion, both sets of twins have identical names – Roy (Ranveer Singh) and Joy (Varun Sharma). Another peculiar phenomenon – one Roy is immune to electricity, which actually affects the other Roy, who feels the aftershocks of the current from afar. The former decides to carry forward his father’s Circus legacy by channelling his superpower as ‘Electric Man’.

Things turn to chaos when the Bangalore Roy-Joy land up in Ooty for a land deal and everyone keeps mistaking them for the Cirkus duo. The Bangalore team also has a robber trio lead by Momo (Siddharth Jadhav) hot on their heels, planning to steal their money bag.

The Cirkus Roy is happily married to Mala (Pooja Hegde) but he’s reluctant to give in to her insistence for adoption when they fail to have a baby. Coz apna khoon, apna hota hai. Ironic, isn’t it? Meanwhile, the other Roy is soon to be engaged to Bindu (Jacqueline Fernandez) but her father (Sanjay Mishra) is not very keen about the couple.

Add Naag Mani (Vrajesh Hirjee) a shady taxi driver, Polson Bhai (Johnny Lever) – an old gangster, and Daaku Bagheera (Mukesh Tiwari) a goonda turned businessman … and you got a Cirkus on your hands!

What Do We Think:

Sanjay Mishra

The comedy in Cirkus is underwhelming and the ‘twin’ joke is dragged on way past the peak of its humour.

The 1st half falls flat with mediocre gags… things perk up a bit in the 2nd half but it never goes past the ‘slight chuckle’ stage. There aren’t really many distinguishing characteristics between both sets of twins, so it feels like both Ranveer and Varun are playing the same role over again.

Johnny Lever

Deepika Padukone’s cameo is a fresh welcome but apart from Current Laga Re, none of the songs strike a chord. Ranveer’s acting feels too over-the-top and childish for the flat comedy. Varun Sharma is endearing but doesn’t stand out.

Siddharth Jadhav | Cirkus Movie Review 2022
Siddharth Jadhav

Sanjay Mishra, Siddharth Jadhav, Mukesh Tiwari are good with their comic timing and succeed in infusing the film with some enthusiasm and laughs, but the screenplay falls short. Vrajesh Hirjee could have been hilarious but is criminally underutilized as Naag Mani. Murali Sharma too is merely a bystander, doing nothing else but following the action from afar.

Jacqueline and Pooja Hegde have a limited, flowerpot role but they carry it with grace. The only promise on the horizon is the hint about Golmaal 5. In short, Current Nai Laga Re!

Hit Or Miss:

Watch in the theatres if you’re a Ranveer Singh fan or if you’re in the mood for some family entertainer. Otherwise, this one’s a miss.
