A shocking piece of news hit the headline recently.

Renowned Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi has been sentenced to 2-year of imprisonment in a 19 year old case.

According to HT, Daler Mehndi has been arrested and sent to jail on Thursday (June 14) in a human trafficking case that happened back in 2003. The judgement was passed by a Patiala court.

As per Times Now, the singer and his now deceased brother Shamsher Singh were allegedly accused of taking money to illegally send people mainly to the US and Canada by making them a part of his ‘dance troop’. While they did “drop off” some people, there were others who alleged that they took money but did not take them along.

“It is pertinent to mention that Daler Mehndi was punished for two years on 16.03.18 by the JMIC Patiala. Now he is being sent to Patiala jail. The Patiala police have already taken him into its custody,” the court order reportedly reads.

As the Times Now report further suggests, an FIR was registered at the Sardar Patiala police station back in 2003, and the singer was booked under sections 406, 420, 120B, 465, 468, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Indian Passport Act.

The reports also suggest, after 2003, the police received 35 more similar complaints against the popular singer.

Reportedly, the Punjab police even found ample evidence against the singer after they had conducted a raid at his office in Connaught Place, New Delhi and seized the documents.
