Veteran Bollywood actor-Congress leader Raj Babbar has been sentenced to 2-year jail by a court in Lucknow.
As per HT, the actor-turned-politician has been awarded a 2-year jail sentence by the MP/MLA court in Lucknow for allegedly assaulting a polling officer in the 1996 general elections of Lucknow. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 8,500 on him.
The FIR was lodged Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996 by the polling officer. Reportedly, Raj Babbar has been convicted of obstruction of government work and assault.
Now, as per the latest TOI report, Raj Babbar has been granted an interim bail and will soon approach the sessions court to challenge the MP/MLA court’s judgement.
About 1996 Assault Case:
Back in 1996, Babbar was in the Samajwadi Party and was contesting the elections against BJP’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee for the Lok Sabha seat in the 1996 general elections of Lucknow.
Sourced from a report, the assaulted officer named Shri Krishna Singh Rana had allegedly claimed in the FIR that Babbar and some of his supporters had barged into the polling booth during the elections and physically assaulted him.
As per reports, Babbar was found guilty of roughing up a government officer during the 1996 Lok Sabha elections but got bail that time. Arvind Singh Yadav, another co-accused in this case, had reportedly died during the trial.
