Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi movie controversy has heated up again.
Be it Padmaavat or Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Sanjay Leela Bhansali always seems to face trouble regarding his movie names.
Supreme Court Suggests Gangubai Kathiawadi Title Change?
And again objection to Gangubai Kathiawadi’s title has arisen at the very last hour, with the movie set for release this Friday (25 Feb). On Wednesday, Supreme Court suggested to SLB that since Gangubai Kathiawadi is embroiled in various pending cases which are seeking to stay the film’s release, the title should be changed.
The apex court will be hearing the matter today. On the other hand, Bombay High Court has already dismissed 3 petitions that were seeking deletion of the words ‘Kamathipura’, ‘Kathiawadi’ and ‘China’ from the movie.

Gangubai’s Granddaughter Says Gangubai Wasn’t A Prostitute, But A Social Activist
While SLB has maintained that Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, Gangubai’s granddaughter Bharti Sonawane has claimed that the film is tarnishing her grandma’s reputation. She is trying to ensure the release gets halted.
In an earlier media interaction, the family member had raised an objection that instead of social activist, Gangubai was wrongly being portrayed as a ‘prostitute’.
“The way Gangubai was portrayed is completely wrong and baseless. It is vulgar. You are representing a social activist as a prostitute. Which family would like it? You have made her (Gangubai) a vamp and lady don,” Gangubai’s family lawyer had said.
Talking to TOI, Bharti said that their consent wasn’t taken before making the film.
“She was my grandmother. It wasn’t her mistake that she stayed in Kamathipura. Different types of people stay in Kamathipura. So, are all women from Kamathipura prostitutes? He has defamed our name. We are not able to show our faces to anyone. Our relatives and peers ask us, “Aisi thi kya aapki Nani? She used to hang out and interact with policemen on a daily basis. She wasn’t a prostitute.” Bharti told TOI.
Gangubai’s family is also claiming that Hussain Zaidi wrote the book without evidence; just based on stories by Gangubai’s acquaintances.
