At a 2007 public event that took place in the presence of Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty, the former had kissed Shetty on the cheeks.
The whole act was a friendly enaction of a scene from one of Gere’s films titled Shall We Dance.
However, an enraged audience took offence to this little show and an obscenity case was filed against both Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty. As per a report, a court of metropolitan magistrate Ketki Chavan discharged Shilpa on January 18.
In the order that was released on 24th January, the court said, “It seems that the accused Shilpa Shetty is the victim of the alleged act of accused no. 1 (Richard Gere). Not a single element of any of the alleged offence is being satisfied in the complaint.”
After this hiatus, Richard also issued an apology towards his ‘Indian Friends’. “It is sad that Gere had to apologize for no fault of his. All he had done was enacted a scene from his film Shall We Dance to entertain the truckers at the AIDS awareness event. It was a natural cute and loving impromptu gesture by Gere which was blown out of proportion due to improper projection by the gossip-hungry television media,” Shilpa’s then spokesperson Dale Bhagwagar had said.
