Last week, the makers of Ranveer Singh‘s ’83’ held a grand premiere for Bollywood celebs and friends.
Directed by Kabir Khan, the biographical sports drama has been released in theatres on December 24, 2021.
’83’ chronicles India’s historic win at the 1983 World Cup and the movie sees Ranveer in the role of the legendary cricketer Kapil Dev.
While Ranveer nailed the character and how, rumours are rife that NOT Ranveer, but Arjun Kapoor was reportedly the first choice for Kapil Dev’s role in ’83’. As Pinkvilla reported, the movie was originally announced in 2014 and was supposed to be helmed by National Award-winning writer-director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan.
An insider informed the portal, “Arjun didn’t attend the premiere of one of his closest friends. He is shooting for Kuttey, but he could have taken out a few minutes for Ranveer as it was a big moment for Ranveer. But the fact is, Arjun was the first choice for 83. When Vishnuvardhan and Sanjay were putting together the movie, they were keen to cast Arjun Kapoor as Kapil Dev. The project was announced in 2014 but later Sanjay was replaced by Kabir Khan in 2017.”
However, filmmaker Kabir Khan has finally put an end to the rumours. Talking to India Today, the filmmaker revealed that Ranveer Singh was his first and only choice to play Kapil Dev.
“For me, from the time I got the idea that I am making 83, my first choice was Ranveer Singh. A lot of people were asking me why Ranveer. The usual answer would be because he is the finest actor of our generation. But, for me, it was a director’s gut instinct to pick the right person. And I am so glad that he was my first choice,” the director stated.
“I went to him, he said yes and today when we have completed the film, I cannot imagine anybody else doing what Ranveer has done,” he added.
Besides Ranveer Singh, ’83’ also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jatin Sarna, Pankaj Tripathi, Deepika Padukone in pivotal roles.
