Storyline

Mimi (Kriti Sanon) is a young dancer hailing from a small town in the state of Rajasthan. The aspiring actress is out and about trying to pave her way into Bollywood and her destination to fulfill those dreams happens to be Mumbai. Bhanu (Pankaj Tripathi) is a driver who has been touring an American couple – Summer and John (Evelyn Edwards and Aidan Whytock), in and out of town. On one such trip, he overhears the foreigners converse about surrogacy. In an attempt to understand the process, he gets involved in their search for a perfect ‘candidate’.

The trio soon stumble into Mimi’s world and she is opted as the perfect choice on the spot. Post all the comical convincing it takes Bhanu to get Mimi on board, the surrogacy procedure happens and Mimi is soon expecting a baby. However, lightning strikes the sunny atmosphere when the American couple hear news of the baby possibly being mentally challenged and decide on running away. However, cut to four years later, Mimi raises her now young and healthy ‘Raj’ and live peacefully. That is until Summer and John make their way back to take their child away from Mimi.

What do we think?

Mimi is a heartwarming and touching story of motherhood. The movie shows the struggles of losing one’s child, surrogacy, adoption and birth-giving, all together. A mother gives up her dreams and ambitions so that her offspring can fulfill his/hers. Kriti Sanon, being the centre of this film, has portrayed a lovely process of motherhood. From the worries, the fear to the uncertainties, everything was a gradual progression of emotions and pleasant to watch.

Apart from Kriti, Pankaj Tripathi is the man of the movie who absolutely stole the show. Sure, there were sentimental and intense moments that felt a little too serious but Tripathi’s excellent understanding of comedy and acting has only proven that he is indeed one of the finest artists we have in the industry. Without Pankaj Tripathi’s lighthearted fun and genuine expressions, we dare say the movie could have strayed a little away from the desired outcome.

Another commendable performance belongs to Sai Tamhankar, who has already established herself to be highly talented in her Marathi works. Her Mimi venture was certainly a positive hike in her career graph and we’d like to see more performances by the actress soon.

Hit or Miss?

We’ll be giving Mimi a big HIT! Not only because we couldn’t help but get emotional during certain scenes or because of the cute little children in the movie, but because of how well this adaptation has been panned out.
