Happy 47th birthday to Sacred Games actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui!
Nawazuddin truly has let his passion for the craft do the talking for him and we have one such incident to narrate that will emphasize this trait of the actor.
Sometimes, acting and love for the subject matter can take priority over monetary compensation if you get a particularly meaty role to delve into. For Nawazuddin, this role was for the Nandita Das directorial ‘Manto’.
Nawazuddin played the titular character of the late Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto. And now coming to the juicy part- did you know he only charged ‘Rs 1’ for the film? That’s right!
When asked about why he was doing the film basically for free, the powerhouse performer had told IANS –
“When I was briefed about the film and especially about the character, I felt he thinks a lot like me. I also think the same way, but I do not have courage like him. I thought if I would charge from Nandita (Das) to put up my thoughts and ideas through Manto, nothing else will give me higher guilt than this. But since I am a professional actor, I charged one rupee.”
Nandita Das too had opened up on Nawaz’s humble gesture, “This is the character that an actor would give an arm and a leg for. But to not charge even a nominal fee is very gracious of Nawaz.”
What a guy! On the work front, Nawazuddin was last seen in Serious Men. He will next be featuring in Jogira Sara Ra Ra and Bole Chudiyan.
