Actress Barkha Singh has already marked her territory into films, web series, social media and has become the influencer of our generation.
Read on to know more about her latest release ‘Murder Meri Jaan’, the start of her influencer life and 3 myths about content creators!
On ‘Murder Meri Jaan’
Barkha’s latest project is the Disney+ Hotstar web series ‘Murder Meri Jaan’. Singh talks about her role in it saying, “The character that I’m playing in the show is called Sonal. She is a con-artist who marries people and dupes them. She then gets hired by the comissioner as a consultant and no one knows she’s the con-artist. She’s married to the ACP who is supposed to be catching her. The solve cases together and have a whole parallel romance.”
“When we were reading and preparing for our characters, we also didn’t know the plots so we use to sit and keep guessing. Then when we used to reach that episode’s filming, none of us would turn out to be the right guesser. People are in for a proper murder mystery treat,” she continues.
An advice to your old self?
We also asked Singh to tell us one advice she would give her old self. To that, she hilariously replied, “Don’t worry so much about unit test marks. No one cares about your unit test marks. Definitely study for your prelims, board exams, finals, get through the year and do amazingly well but no one cares about unit tests. That stress is not needed. We should channelise that energy into performing better and studying more.“
Why did you become an influencer/content creator?
As I started acting and as more and more of my work came out, I realised that my follwing and the numbers on my social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) page started growing and I started recieving a lot of communication from the other side and this was at a time I wasn’t creating content. I would just put up photos. That is when I realised that there is something out here and this is at a time when becoming an influencer wasn’t known. This was at a time when people said, “Accha beta you create videos? That’s what you do all day?”
I started creating content around 2015 and my YouTube came out much later in 2018. When I sae a rise in my social media numbers, I felt that there is something that can be done here. I have always enjoyed the whole creative process of conceptualising, scripting, shooting, editing and seeing what you can do with it. I started creating content not thinking that it is going to go anywhere but thankfully it did.
Fame VS Clout
To be an influencer is to have power. We wanted the actress’s opinion on the difference between fame and clout. Rest assured, we were quite enlightened with her response. “The difference between having fame and clout is what you do with your fame. When you are able to mobilize people into taking action for something that you believe is important that you stand for or just introducing them to new things and letting them take the action for what they stand for. This is when you say you have clout and not just fame.”
3 Myths about content creators
- We are not always happy, we have feelings too. So when you decide to troll us and give out negative comments, it actually hurts.
- The second myth I’d like to burst is that we are always swimming with ideas and that we’re always upbeat. No! I can speak for the entire creative community, all of us have these days when we are flipping out because we don’t get ideas and we have deadlines. So half the time we are panicking to land good ideas.
- We don’t get everything for free, we buy our things. Everyone thinks, “Oh, you didn’t buy this”. I’m sorry but it doesn’t always happen that my favourite brand is sending me a PR hamper. There are certain things we like to use and those things we have to buy.
