He gave us some really insightful comments on being vocal on social media and the trolling that ensues on doing the same.
Salman Khan & Debut In Radhe?
“It was quite sudden, Salman Khan told me about the role – it was part of the supporting cast but an important character. I immediately said yes.
Salman Sir has been telling me to act for so long, he had said ‘You have the personality, why don’t you come onscreen and become an actor?’ Many people have preconceived notions about singers even if you’re a trained actor, but Salman said he’ll give me the role. Talking about the 1st day on the set, it was nerve-wracking but eventful! He really mentored me.”
What Should Change In Music Industry?
“So much has to change in the industry. There has to be more equity for the artists and less equity for the labels. And it will change.
We didn’t dream of royalties 3 years ago. People thought the only way to make money is through live shows. We hope (in future) that we get royalties of our music that will contribute to 50% of our earnings.”
Speaking Up On Social Media & Trolling…?
“It’s commendable if you have the courage to speak up on social media. But it’s unfair to expect to speak up. We’re not a ‘free-speech first’ society, we’re a ‘social responsibility first’ society. I don’t think it’s black and white, there are so many layers to it.
There’s also the mental health aspect – a lot of people don’t have the strength, the mental fortitude to deal with the trolling (that comes with speaking up). I have spoken up about a lot of things that may not be popular where I feel 100% sure of something. But you can’t expect that from everybody.”
