(TRIGGER WARNING: MURDER) It’s alright if you’re taking inspiration from movies for some romantic, grand gestures… not GRISLY MURDERS.
Recently, a disturbing incident came to light, when a man took to movies to help mask his horrific crime.
If you remember, Ajay Devgn’s 2015 crime thriller Drishyam, had him portray the smart Vijay Salgaonkar. When his wife and daughter accidentally end up killing a guy (who just happens to be the son of an Inspector General) to save themselves from his sexual assault, Vijay decides to protect his family no matter what. He carefully hides the dead body under the police station while it’s being constructed to outsmart the cops.
Now, Vijay had quite the honourable intention of saving his family for resorting to such desperate measures. However, the 34-year-old Suraj Harmalkar was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend Amita Mohite!
The gruesome crime took place last year in October 2020, but it was only on January 14 that the Boisar Police managed to arrest him.
Suraj had hidden his girlfriend’s body in in the bathroom loft of his rented flat in Vangaon, Palghar and had constructed a wall with cement, mortar and anti-leak glue to prevent foul smell.
Why Did Suraj Kill Amita?
As reported by TOI, Suraj, who worked as a driver in Boisar MIDC had met Amita 6 years ago and the duo had entered into a relationship, which her family had even approved. On October 21, 2020, the couple had reportedly gone out for their wedding shopping. However, Amita didn’t return home nor answer her family’s calls.
Amita’s family then received WhatsApp messages claiming that she and Suraj had moved to Vapi and gotten married. Perturbed by this turn of events, the family tried contacting Suraj but he refused to speak to them.
The family then filed a case against Harmalkar with Vangaon police in October. Shockingly enough, just last week, Amita’s brother spotted Suraj in Boisar and brought him to the Boisar police station for questioning.
The TWIST
On police interrogation, it was found that Suraj was in possession of Amita’s cellphone. And here comes the TWIST – Harmalkar confessed to the police that he had already been married before Amita, but was estranged with his wife. Amita was oblivious to his marital status and hence had been pressing him to marry her.
Frustrated by the constant pestering, Suraj strangled Amita and dumped her body in the bathroom loft and cemented it. To avoid suspicion and ensure there was no foul smell, Harmalkar continued to pay rent and visited the flat regularly.
During the course of the interrogation, Suraj confessed that Drishyam inspired him with the idea of how to dispose of the body!
