Renowned writer, Chetan Bhagat became a household name when his critically acclaimed book, Five Point Someone was adapted into one of the highest grossing movies Indian Cinema has seen till date, 3 Idiots!
In a Twitter war with Anupama Chopra, Bhagat pointed out how Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer of 3 Idiots and also husband to Anupama Chopra, had bullied him and almost drove him to suicide during the time of film’s release in 2009.
Chetan Bhagat tweeted, “Sushant’s last film releases this week. I want to tell the snob and elitist critics right now, write sensibly. Don’t act oversmart. Don’t write rubbish. Be fair and sensible. Don’t try your dirty tricks. You have ruined enough lives. Now stop. We’ll be watching”
To this popular critic Anupama Chopra retweeted, “Each time you think the discourse can’t get lower, it does.”
Chetan Bhagat retaliated to Chopra‘s tweet and claimed how her husband, Vidhu Vinod Chopra had “publicly bullied” him and drove him “close to suicide” by not giving him the deserving credits for the movie.
“Ma’am, when your husband publicly bullied me, shamelessly collected all the best story awards, tried denying me credit for my story and drove me close to suicide, and you just watched, where was your discourse?” stated Chetan’s tweet.
Released in the year 2009, 3 Idiots was a smashing HIT, critically as well as on the box office! While Bhagat was given the end credits, he wasn’t very happy with how it was done.
In an interview, Bhagat said, “It’s fine that they’ve given me credit in the rolling credits, but how can they not give me credit for the story? The film is based on my book, they have to give me [credit].”
However, director of 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani clarified how Bhagat was given due credit as per the mentioned terms in their contract.
“According to the contract, it clearly says that Chetan will be given credit in the rolling credit, which comes at the end of the film. He is lying when he says that his name comes after the junior artists, his name is after the main artists of the movie. See the movie to believe me” Hirani‘s statement!
The arguement turned ugly with every statement until Chetan decided to drop the entire thing completely!
