Sushant Singh Rajput’s death has stirred up the ever so neglected topic of nepotism in the Bollywood industry. Prominent names in the industry have opened up about the existing nepotism, power play by popular personalities and how the pressure to barely stay in business can be mentally exhausting.
Very recently Sonu Nigam opened up on social media and shared an IGTV video talking about how certain “Music Mafias” in the industry have been creating a roadblocks for talented & aspiring musicians.
Without mentioning any names, he also admitted how he was also a victim of this power play by a certain Bollywood actor. “An actor, the one at whom everybody is pointing fingers these days, has done this with me, saying I should not be made to sing, the same actor has done this with Arijit Singh also. How can someone use their power like that?”
He added “Sushant Singh Rajput died, an actor died. Tomorrow, you can hear the same about a singer, or a composer, or a lyrics writer. Because the music scenario in our country… there are bigger ‘mafias’ here that in the film industry, unfortunately,” said Mr Nigam. “The power rests in the hands of two of them… just two from the music industry. They own companies. They have the power to make someone sing or not sing.”
“Everybody wants to ‘rule’ the business,” said Sonu Nigam!
He requested the “mafias” to be kind to the newcomers by saying “It’s very difficult for the new kids, very difficult… I speak to every one of them. They are troubled that the producer wants to work with them, the director wants to work, even the music composer wants to work with them but the music company will say: ‘This is not our artist’,”
“I was lucky that I joined (the industry) at a young age, I escaped the clutches,” he added, saying that he joined music industry in Mumbai in 1991 so “I got out of it. I don’t have any wish to sing for the last 15 years. It’s ok. I am happy in my own world. But I have seen the frustration in the eyes, in the voice, in the words of new singers, new composers, new lyrics writers… tears of blood, sometimes.” “If you can do this with me, then what you guys must have been doing with the newcomers,” he said and added: “Hope more people don’t die by suicide.”
To what Sonu Nigam told about: “He’s done that with Arijit Singh.” Sonu made an indirect reference towards Salman Khan as according to sources in 2016, Salman had reportedly asked to drop a song recorded by Arijit Singh from his film Sultan as he was offended by the singer’s mannerisms at an award show.
