Ekta Kapoor is reportedly working on a sequel to Udta Punjab (2016), the crime drama starring Shahid Kapoor that explored Punjab’s drug crisis.
While the project is still in its early stages, reports say that filmmaker Aakash Kaushik has been enlisted to write and direct it.
Although an official announcement has yet to be made, the report suggests that Shahid Kapoor is being considered for the lead role.
Unlike the original film directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab 2 will be led by Aakash Kaushik, known for scripting Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Housefull 4. The sequel will not follow the same storyline but will once again delve into Punjab’s persistent drug crisis. Abhishek Chaubey will not be part of the project as he is currently engaged with other commitments.
According to the report, Ekta Kapoor is eager to have Shahid Kapoor return for Udta Punjab 2. However, discussions are still in the early stages, and a final decision will be made once the script is finalized. The film is expected to go into production next year.
Ekta Kapoor has a track record of producing sequels, with projects like Ragini MMS 2, LSD 2, and Ek Villain Returns under her belt. In addition to Udta Punjab 2, she is reportedly developing Dream Girl 3 and a sequel to Veere Di Wedding. While The Dirty Picture 2 and A Flying Jatt 2 were once in the pipeline, they have yet to take shape.
