Vicky Kaushal starrer Chhaava is a period epic that has made an impressive start at the box office.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the Laxman Utekar directorial has recorded the biggest opening of 2025.
Additionally, it has surpassed Gully Boy’s record for the highest Valentine’s Day collection by an Indian film.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Chhaava had a strong start at the box office, earning approximately ₹31 crores (net) across all languages on its opening day. The film recorded an overall 35.17% occupancy in Hindi. This marks not only the biggest opening of Vicky Kaushal’s career but also the highest opening for any Indian film in 2025 so far.
With this impressive total, Chhaava has become Vicky Kaushal’s biggest opener to date, far surpassing the ₹8.20 crore debut of Uri: The Surgical Strike. It has also claimed the title of the highest-opening film of 2025, overtaking Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force, which earned ₹15.30 crore on its first day last month.
Additionally, Chhaava broke Gully Boy’s 2019 record of ₹19.40 crore, making it the highest-grossing Indian film on Valentine’s Day.
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava is a historical action drama centered on the life of Maratha king Sambhaji, portrayed by Vicky Kaushal. The film features Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Ashutosh Rana as Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite, and Divya Dutta as Soyarabai. Adapted from Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel Chhava, the film’s score and soundtrack are composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.
