The case, initiated in 2018 by a company named Shree, involved a cheque issued by Varma’s firm that was dishonoured due to insufficient funds.

Over the years, the case was heard in the Andheri Magistrate Court. In June 2022, Varma was granted bail after providing a personal recognizance bond and cash security of ₹5,000. However, despite multiple hearings, Varma failed to comply with the court’s directives and repeatedly missed appearances, causing delays in the proceedings.

On Tuesday, after seven years of legal wrangling, the court delivered its verdict. Varma was found guilty of violating Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which penalizes the dishonour of cheques. His absence from the court on the day of the verdict prompted the Magistrate to issue a standing non-bailable warrant (NBW) for his arrest.

In addition to the jail term, Varma has been ordered to pay ₹3.72 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months. Failure to pay this amount will result in an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
