Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a towering figure in Indian cinema, passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 90. He had been undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital since December 14.

Shyam Benegal Death Due To Chronic Kidney Disease 

“His chronic kidney disease had worsened significantly in recent years, ultimately leading to his demise,” shared his daughter, Pia.

Widely regarded as a pioneer of the Indian parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s, Benegal was celebrated for his ability to weave compelling narratives rooted in realism and social insight. His illustrious career was marked by numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1976, the Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005.

Benegal’s legacy is further immortalized by his remarkable collection of National Film Awards, reflecting his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. His works continue to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike, leaving an indelible mark on the art of storytelling.
