Ranveer Singh has killed it! He wholeheartedly embraces the OTT energy of his character, making it endearing. Though the trailer may have seemed underwhelming, he and Alia Bhatt have a crackling, playful chemistry throughout the film. Rocky Aur Rani is an ultra-cheesy but wholesome, family-friendly rom-com drama with a whole lot of heart and spirit!

Storyline:
The Randhawas and The Chatterjees are poles apart. While the former is headed by a stern matriarch handling the mithai business, the latter are a more relaxed folk.
The flamboyant Randhawa heir Rocky (Ranveer) approaches the ambitious anchor Rani Chatterjee (Alia), after finding out that her grandmother was the ex-flame of his demented grandfather. Sparks fly between Rocky-Rani as they try to reunite their grandparents.
But the cultural clash between both families is too striking… so Rocky-Rani decide to swap and spend 3 months at each other’s houses to get accustomed to their respective way of life. But will the two opposites be able to survive this transition or will their differences break them?

What Do We Think:
Rocky Aur Rani is an entertaining ride from start-to-finish! First things first, though the trailer and Tum Kya Mile song might have received mixed responses from the audience about Ranveer Singh-Alia Bhatt’s chemistry…..rest assured that is not the case for the whole film.
Ranveer-Alia have plenty of playful chemistry, hilarious banter and heartwarming moments in the film. 1st half is quite entertaining and filled with madness. Ranveer is in top form and wholeheartedly embraces the OTT energy and theatrics of his Rocky character. He aces the obnoxiously loud avatar of Rocky making it feel endearing instead of annoying, carrying his eccentric fashion with utter confidence! His comic timing is impeccable as well, though some jokes are a hit-and-miss.
He balances the humour and drama well… he is equally convincing in the serious, emotional scenes that require him to act with his eyes. Though the duo look awkward and stilted while prancing around the mountains in Tum kya Mile, they hit their stride in the comic scenes and maintain the tension wonderfully in the dramatic moments.
Alia looks gorgeous in the tasteful chiffon sarees and is a nice foil to Ranveer’s OTT avatar as the sensible, confident, graceful and firm Rani Chatterjee. However, here, Ranveer outperforms Alia with his sheer energy.
The film is a little ham-handed and very cheesy at times and though it’s progressive, it tends to get a little in-your-face about its messaging. Nevertheless, KJO weaves a web of hilarity and engaging, sentimental family drama.
Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan as the perpetually annoyed, patriarchal Grandma is a delight to watch. Shabana Azmi-Dharmendra’s long-lost romance brings in a lot of heartwarming moments in the film. Shabana carries her role with a lot of grace and wisdom, while Dharmendra as the dementia-afflicted Grandpa is absolutely adorable.
Churni Ganguly-Ranveer’s funny, quirky dynamic elevates the humour in the film. And Tota Roy Chowdhury’s impressive dancing skills make him stand out!
Coming to the songs – the album is time pass but a bit underwhelming for the usual, expected KJO standard. He pays a decent homage to Yash Chopra’s filmmaking, with idyllic shots amongst ice-capped mountains and colourful chiffon sarees.
What Jhumka is a peppy track but still mediocre compared to KJO’s previous bangers. The vibrant Dhindora Baje Re is better, infused with quite lively performances of Alia and Ranveer. Of course, tidbits of the oldies Bollywood music sprinkled in to complement Shabana-Dharmendra’s story evoke the nostalgia factor.
Overall, while Rocky Aur Rani has its flaws, it’s a wholesome, family-friendly rom-com drama with a whole lot of heart and spirit!
