Director: Sai Kabir

Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Avneet Kaur

Rating: 1.5/5

Duration: 1 Hour 51 Mins

Plotline:

Tiku Weds Sheru is a romantic comedy about two quirky characters – Shiraz Khan Afghani aka Sheru (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Tasleem Khan aka Tiku (Avneet Kaur) – who dream of becoming film stars.

Sheru is a junior artist and lives in a Mumbai chawl with a cat named Elizabeth. He is also a poetry-spouting pimp who supplies drugs to make ends meet. Sheru is one of the hundreds of struggling artists who are trying their luck to make it big in the ‘city of dreams’.

One day, he receives a marriage proposal from Bhopal-based Tiku’s family along with a fat dowry of Rs 10 lakhs. Sheru sees Tiku’s photo, who is much younger than him, and instantly falls in love with her.

Tiku aspires to become a Bollywood star but belongs to an abusive and conservative family.

Initially rejecting Sheru, Tiku then agrees to get married to him just because she sees him as a ticket to escape her family and go to Mumbai, where her boyfriend, Binni Arora, has promised to make her a ‘superstar’.

After reaching Mumbai, Tiku finds out that she is pregnant with Binni’s child and elopes with him. However, she soon learns that Binny is already married and also has a child.  Eventually, Tiku grows feelings for her husband. Sheru pretends to be rich and lies to her about working as a film financer.

Tiku Weds Sheru review

While their romance blooms, they get caught between the chaos of the underworld, drugs and face one tragedy after another. Will their relationship survive the odds thrown at them?

What Do We Think?

Tiku Weds Sheru is quite dramatic and cliched. Writer Amit Tiwari has added way too many tracks that after a point, the story becomes a mess. Sai Kabir’s direction is poor. The story is well-intentioned but fails in execution. The movie also has a fair share of cringy scenes and dialogues.

With references to drug busts, casting couch and shady producers, Tiku Weds Sheru is set in the underbelly of Bollywood. Tiku shouting “I am an outsider too” when producer Kangana Ranaut turns up for a cameo is a subtle dig at the outsider vs insider debate.

The poor script is aided by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur’s performances. Nawazuddin seems to be a good fit for the role. However, this isn’t something that he hasn’t done before.

Avneet Kaur is a surprise package in her debut movie. The 21-year-old is convincing as a young, clueless small-town girl Sheru who is desperate to hit Bollywood stardom.

Avneet’s pairing with Nawazuddin feels totally off. Tiku & Sheru’s love story angle doesn’t make any sense. For the unversed, the lead actors have an age gap of 28 years.

The supporting actors are wasted in this poor, half-baked script.

HIT Or MISS?

Tiku Weds Sheru is a dreadful mess that could have been much more than it is with proper direction and script. Overall, the movie is an easily avoidable affair.
