Late Filmmaker Yash Chopra’s wife Pamela Chopra joined him in heaven today. She passed away at age 74.
Take a look at Yash Chopra-Pamela Chopra’s sweet love story. ‘Ghanti Baj Gayi’ – Mr Chopra finally told his family when he felt Pamela was indeed the one for him.
Pehle Ghanti Nai Baji?
The iconic couple had tied the knot in 1970. But did you know it wasn’t love at first sight for the duo? Nope, their 1st official meeting – arranged by family friend Romesh Sharma, was rather lacklustre.
‘Ghanti nahi baji (The bell didn’t ring)’ – Yash told his family while Pamela too was less than enthused and admitted to her folks that the meeting was – ‘Nothing great!’.
1st Time They Saw Each Other
Actually, the very first time they saw each other was at a cricket match and Pamela thought he was staring at her cousins.
“My cousins were very pretty and you know, he had an eye for pretty girls, so he kept turning around throughout the match. But we did not meet or talk to each other,” Pamela commented.
1st Time They Spoke To Each Other, He Was Busy With A Film Deal With Hema Malini
The 2nd time, when they met and actually spoke (albeit briefly) to each other was at the sangeet of Chopra’s niece. Yash complimented Pam’s singing but was too busy trying to crack a film deal with Hema Malini.
“I think the first time I spoke to him was at Yashji’s niece’s wedding sangeet. I met him very briefly at first. He was too busy trying to convince Hema Malini to do a film. He and Hema were on the balcony the whole time. He came in only when the singing started. I was singing. He came up to me and complimented me on my singing. That was it,” Pam revealed.
Finally Ghanti Baj Gayi!
When things didn’t work out at their 1st official meeting and both of them had given up thinking of it as a ‘wedding match’ – it was then that the atmosphere shifted. And in the end, all’s well that ends well because Yash ji told his family – Ghanti Baj Gayi!
“Yash missed his flight and had to spend another day in Delhi, so another meeting was arranged. This time, it went very well. I saw a completely different side of Yash. He was wearing a lungi and kurta, sitting on the floor and playing a chamach on the dholki and Romesh’s sister was playing the dholak and they were singing. It was great fun.
We were relaxed because we thought that this match won’t happen. When you meet someone for matrimony, there is a certain tension. This time, there was no tension because we had both decided we were not going to go ahead with the wedding. Strangely enough, I started liking him and he reciprocated. He went to Mumbai and told his family ‘Ghanti baj gayi (‘The bell has rung)”.
Yash Chopra-Pamela Chopra have two sons – Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra. Aditya is the current Chairman and Managing Director of Yash Raj Films.
May Pamela ji rest in peace!
