Runtime: 2h 14m

Storyline:

Settled in the idyllic Norway with her husband Anurag(Anirban), Debika Chatterjee (Rani) is a home-maker with two young kids – the 2-year old Shubh and 4-month old baby Suchi.

The young mother is in for a rude shock when the Norwegian Child Welfare agency Velfred swoops in and takes their kids away – claiming her to be a mentally unfit mother. Taking small cultural differences and exaggerating them into big charges, the agency falsely makes a case of wrong parenting.

What follows is the unrelenting battle of Mrs Chatterjee for the rightful custody of her kids. From lawyers who switch sides to manipulative family members, and an alarming scam against immigrant children – Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway makes for a riveting emotional tale and an interesting courtroom drama.

What Do We Think:

Based on Sagarika Chakraborty’s case

For the unversed, this movie is based on the true story of Sagarika Chakraborty’s custody war against Norway for her kids Abhigyan and Aishwarya.

Rani is in stellar form, and has done full justice to the role, truly living the part of an anguished mother. She has balanced showcasing the vulnerability, the hysterics, the strength, the sheer perseverance of a wronged woman intent on getting justice.

The first half of the movie is engaging and flows evenly – showcasing the India-Norway cultural differences, the insidious foster care scam, the troubled immigration perspective and more. The interval comes at the right point, maintaining the tension in the plot.

The 2nd half follows the engaging, unprecedented courtroom case. Jim Sarbh plays a Norwegian lawyer and he has nailed his role. You can sense on one hand he is all for upholding the law of the country he belongs to, but he does deeply empathize with the immigrant woman’s plight.

One thing that does stand out as rather annoying – is the one-dimensionally cruel, smirking portrayal of the Norwegian childcare agency representatives. However, the story of Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway in itself is such a compelling human rights drama, that one is bound to forgive any other missteps.

Hit Or Miss:

Must-watch this emotional drama and interesting courtroom case in the theatres!
