I loved the film, and cried at the climax! (Adivi Sesh smiles, blows a flying kiss) Major got 4 times the opening of the rest of your films…it is the biggest hit of your career so far!
Adivi Sesh: Yes! It has had a HUGE opening in the South…
Buzz on social media is that you’re the next rising pan-Indian star! How do you react to that label?
Adivi Sesh: That’s not what’s important. My only thought was – we have to tell Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s story. This is just the start. Almost 3 million people have bought the tickets to watch his story…. For me, 3 million is not enough in a nation of 1.4 billion. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, I want this film to reach everyone.
Previously you said that it was tough to include everything from Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s extraordinary, dramatic life. Is there any particular scene/incident you regret cutting from Major?
Adivi Sesh: No regrets really, but I do wish I could’ve. There was just no space! Because I don’t think people would have believed it.
One time Uncle (Sandeep’s father) came home and saw like 50 women’s chappals outside his door. He was puzzled to see so many ladies flocking the house. When he went inside he saw many beautiful, young girls who were swarming Sandeep’s mother!
Apparently, a rumour had spread that Sandeep was getting married, so all these women had come to maska and patao aunty, to get hitched to him! This actually happened! But if I show this in the movie, people would’ve been like kya yaar? Aise thodi hota hai.
You’ve played the character fabulously and done full justice to the role. Like Sandeep Unnikrishnan, is there any brave, selfless deed that you’ve done in your own life?
Adivi Sesh: I don’t know about selfless… but I do recall a brave act. Once, we were shooting for Goodachari (Love that movie! – I interrupt, Sesh smiles again thanking me) in Himachal. There was a man who was walking across while we were filming a fight scene on the rope bridge.
He saw us pulling out guns and in panic assumed that we were actually fighting and shooting. He made to jump off the rope bridge into the water. He legit thought we were going to shoot him, so he was ready to go commit suicide instead!
So, I grabbed him and held onto him and lifted him up. I ended up saving that man’s life.
