1. Gangubai Kathiawadi
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial is based on one of the chapters from Hussain Zaidi’s book, ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’. Alia Bhatt plays the titular role in this film – a young woman who was forced to work as sex worker and in no time marks her own territory, a prominent and celebrated figure in the Kamathipua red-light district of Mumbai.
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is all set to release in theatres on February 25, 2022!
2. Begum Jaan
Directed by Srijit Mukherji, Vidya Balan played the lead role of a brothel madam in ‘Begum Jaan’. Set in the backdrop of late Indian Independence period of 1948, the movie was released on April 14, 2017. When brothel madam Begum Jaan’s home is divided along the Radcliffe Line during the Pakistan-India partition, she and her prostitutes refuse to leave; the madam fights to save her declining business during the chaotic political circumstances.
3. Haseena Parkar
Based on the life of Haseena Parkar, sister of India’s most wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim, Shraddha Kaapoor played the titular role in this Apoorva Lakhia directorial. The biographical crime drama was released in theatres on 22nd September, 2017.
The syopsis of ‘Haseena Parkar’ reads- “Haseena is very close to her brother Dawood, who turns to a life of crime and rises to power in the Mumbai underworld. After the bomb blasts of 1993, Dawood escapes to Dubai and she falls in trouble.”
4. Bandit Queen
‘Bandit Queen’, directed by Shekhar Kapur, tells the story of Phoolan Devi – an innocent girl, who in turn of events, becomes a dreaded dacoit Phoolan Devi. Based on Mala Sen’s 1993 book India’s Bandit Queen: The True Story, ‘Bandit Queen’ starred Seema Biswas in the title role.
5. Godmother
Starring veteran actress Shabana Azmi as the female lead, this Vinay Shukla directorial is inspired by the life of mafia-turned-politician Santokben Jadeja. She had apparently run the Mafia operations at Porbandar, Gujarat, in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
