Storyline

A pre-school teacher Naina (Yami Gautam Dhar), who seems extremely lively and happy-going, has taken 16 of her students hostage. It was made clear that Naina was on a three-week break and she’s returned to work all of a sudden, a whole week prior. Insisting on the parents of the 16 children to go and carry on with their work, Naina takes over her school and makes a call to the police at Mumbai’s Colaba police station admitting her crime. Fast forward to half an hour later, there are multiple police vehicles, officials and officers who are looking for a way to get the children to safety.

The case is being lead by ACP Catherine Alvarez (Neha Dhupia) who calls onto the scene officer Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni). The two of them, despite their constant spat, manage to find the reason for Naina’s ruckus. Naina on the other hand insists on speaking and meeting with the Prime Minister of India (Dimple Kapadia) and only then would she let the children go. What unfolds next is pure horror and misery.

What do we think?

For starters, while the storyline of the film is directed and shot in a very engaging way, it’s the impracticable course of events that take place throughout the film that leave us scoffing. An example of this would be the physical presence of the PM of a nation during such turbulence. However, this isn’t what dominates the film. ‘A Thursday’ emphasises on capital punishment for rapists so that women are empowered to take a stand and fight. Yami Gautam has done a fantastic job portraying the role of a woman traumatised by her dark past, one she struggles to share even with her own fiance. The anxious foot tapping and the restlessness expressed her expertise in acting.

A Thursday Movie Review

A commendable actor in the film is Neha Dhupia, who despite being heavily pregnant at that time in real life pulled off mind-blowing stunts and showcased the worked up lifestyle of a powerful woman cop to perfection. The film could use a little practicality but that doesn’t weigh down how wonderfully the message has been etched unto the end.

Hit or Miss?

Overall, the film is definitely a HIT. Would we watch it twice? We honestly wouldn’t mind. It’s a good thriller that’s got the right amount of suspense and build up.
