Raj belonged to a Rajasthani Royal family; he was the youngest son of Maharawal Lakshman Singhji, the then ruler of Dungarpur, as per Free Press Journal report. Raj was a cricketer who went on to become a BCCI president.

Lata Mangeshkar-Raj Singh Dungarpur met through her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Raj used to frequently visit their residence, and when he met Lata ji, his friendship with her eventually bloomed into love.

However, the duo couldn’t get married because Raj’s father Maharawal Lakshman rejected the alliance as Lata ji wasn’t from a royal family.
Disheartened by their decision, Raj vowed to never marry. Even Lata ji never tied the knot and the two remained fast friends for life! Though their story didn’t have a happy ending, they made their love immortal by staying single.
On September 12, 2009 Raj passed away after battling Alzheimer’s.
