Naseeruddin Shah recently made headlines after his interview stirred up controversy.
The veteran actor called Mughals ‘refugees’ and said that they came to make India their ‘homeland’ and have contributed a lot to its art and culture.
A video of this interview is doing rounds on the Internet but it’s facing major backlash and trolling from the netizens. Here’s what Naseeruddin said –
“The so-called atrocities of the Mughals are being highlighted all the time. We forget that the Mughals are people who have contributed to the country. They are people who have left lasting monuments in the country, who have left the tradition of dancing, music, painting, literature. Mughals came here to make this their homeland. You can call them refugees if you like,” Naseeruddin stated.

People retaliated on social media, saying that Mughals weren’t refugees like Naseeruddin is referring to them as, but rather ‘conquerors, barbaric invaders and colonizers’!
A person tweeted in reaction – “Mughals were invaders not refugees. They were armed raiders, who visited India not to seek asylum, but to rule, taking advantage of disunity amongst the then existing Kingdoms in Indian Peninsula. They had their own culture, a sister branch of Indo Aryan culture, influence was obvious.”
Another wrote – “Why leaving the fact that Mughals also killed hundreds of thousands of indigenous people. *That’s how they alter history*”
