A lot of Bollywood films (both serious & comedy-dramas) have been giving us several surrogate characters.
Today, we bring you a list of 6 surrogate mothers in Hindi films. Have a look:
1. Kriti Sanon In ‘Mimi’
Netflix’s latest venture- ‘Mimi’- starring Kriti Sanon & Pankaj Tripathi in pivotal roles, has been receiving positive reviews mostly. In this Laxman Utekar directorial, Kriti played the role of a dancer who also aspires to become an actress. Trying to pave her way into Bollywood, she agrees to be a surrogate mother for an American couple in exchange for Rs 20 lakhs.
2. Preity Zinta In ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’
Starring Salman Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Preity Zinta, ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ tells the story of a married couple- Raj (played by Salman) & Priya (played by Rani) who are unable to conceive a baby after Priya’s accident. Preity essayed the role of a sex worker named Madhu, who agreed to give birth to Raj’s child via surrogacy.
3. Sushmita Sen In ‘Filhaal’
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, ‘Filhaal’ portrayed the story of two best friends – Rewa (Tabu) & Sia (Sushmita Sen). When Tabu’s character faces birth complications, Sia offers to become her surrogate.
4. Divya Dutta In ‘Life Express’
Released in 2010, ‘Life Express’ follows the story of a career-driven woman (played by Rituparna Sengupta) who aborts her child and then decides to have a child through a surrogate, played by Divya Dutta.
Divya’s character– Gauri– is an impoverished village-based mother of two children, and the wife of an unemployed idol-artist, Mohan.
5. Patralekha In ‘Badnaam Gali’
‘Badnaam Gali’ narrates the story of a young unmarried, Nayonika, played by Patralekha, who decides to become a surrogate mother. The movie also featured ‘Mirzapur’ fame Divyenndu Sharma in a pivotal role.
6. Shabana Azmi In ‘Doosri Dulhaan’
Starring Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore, and Victor Banerjee, this 1983 film also revolves around a couple who is unable to conceive a child after their first miscarriage. As a solution, the couple hires a sex worker (played by Shabana Azmi) to give birth to their child via surrogacy.
