Netflix’s ‘Pagglait’ Movie Review

Director Umesh Bist has come out with yet another dramedy titled ‘Pagglait’ starring Sanya Malhotra in the lead.

From portraying society’s conformist mentality and displaying a rebellious nature, Sanya Malhotra is seen in a new role.

Directed by: Umesh Bist
Run Time: 1h 55m
Ratings: 3.5/5
Cast: Sanya Malhotra, Sayani Gupta, Ashutosh Rana

Storyline

Sandhya (Sanya Malhotra) is a five-month widowed woman who seems to have a hard time being independent. The demise of her husband Astik is followed by various findings that one would not expect.

Pagglait talks about independence coming with a hefty price in an Uttar Pradesh setting. Sandhya, with an English Masters, goes on an awareness journey from being a widower to wanting to be self-sufficient. Her journey includes laughs and cries but the biggest realisation of all takes place when she finds out Astik had a relationship out of their marriage with a co-worker, Ananya (Sayani Gupta).

Meeting Ananya happens to be an eye-opener for Sandhya as she suppresses her timid side and starts hunting for the absolute life.

What do we think?

This Umesh Bist directorial is a two-hour strip on how many families still face the brunt of the inevitable devout in India. Sanya Malhotra’s role in this feature is very different from her usual chic characters. Besides Sanya, Ashutosh Rana’s dramaturgy in the film is more than just commendable. In the times of Pankaj Tripathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Ashutosh Rana has once again proved why he still remains in the versatile troupe.

Pagglait also touches upon severe discrimination which needs to be eradicated pronto. From how different glasses were to be used and how women aren’t to work anywhere with an office set-up (of course unless they’re serving trays), the film covers all the issues that a household might not necessarily talk about.

Umesh Bist, despite covering light on sensitive issues, has unfortunately left the audience in suspense when it comes to discovering the identity of Sandhya’s dead husband, Astik.

Hit or Miss?

The movie definitely seems to be a hit and we think the more people watch it, the better. Pagglait is a movie that teaches you how to be independent and how to overcome what seems to be an impossible obstacle.
