Amazon Prime Video’s Coolie No. 1 Movie Review; A Remake That Should’ve Never Been Made

Inspired by the 1995 film ‘Coolie’ starring Govinda and Karisma in the lead, David Dhawan directed the remake of his own original titled ‘Coolie No. 1’.

However, after watching the 2-hour long film, it is safe to say that this is one remake that shouldn’t have been ever made.

Directed by: David Dhawan
Run Time: 2h 15m
Ratings: 2/5
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Rajpal Yadav, Paresh Rawal, Sahil Vaid, Javed Jaffery, Shikha Talsani

Storyline

Sort of similar to the original version, Coolie No. 1 is a story of how a revenge-seeking Pundit named Jai Kisan (Javed Jaffery) is all set to get the daughter (Sara Ali Khan) of a rich hotelier Jeffery Rozario (Paresh Rawal) married to someone of a lower status after the latter rejected the proposal of the Pundit’s son.

In the process of searching for the perfect groom, Jai Kisan comes across a coolie on a station platform named Raju (Varun Dhawan) who seems to have already fallen in love with Malati, the daughter of Rozario.

The movie then continues with a whirlwind romance between Raju and Malati which is built upon a lie that Raju is a rich businessman. The truth, later on, gets exposed after which the apparently hilarious conflict takes place.

Coolie VS Coolie No. 1

The original movie is without a doubt a better version. Coolie No. 1 is boring, lifeless and a little too extra. Nothing about the movie seems to be even a little bit pleasing though the concept of a remake is to make a movie better than the first.

From the jokes to the conspiracies to the acting, it was all a big blunder. While Sara Ali Khan tries her best to keep up with the fast-paced and funny style of the film, it seems as though Varun Dhawan goes a little overboard with the acting.

Hit or Miss

The film is definitely a miss. What would be a better idea however is to go ahead and rewatch the old film Coolie. This one is a sad case of talents gone to waste.
